WiMAX Has Early Lead Over LTE in Wireless 4G Race

Mobile WiMAX will outpace LTE over the next few years due to its head start on deployments, reports In-Stat.

Mobile WiMAX already has commercial deployments, while LTE won't be commercially available until late 2009. However In-Stat believes WiMAX and LTE will take very different paths.

"Most of the operators looking to deploy WiMAX come to it from the fixed network space. These operators are looking to use WiMAX as an enhanced DSL service. Enhanced DSL will combine both the fixed broadband service with some form of nomadic coverage," says Daryl Schoolar, In-Stat analyst. "Most of the early operators supporting LTE come from the mobile space. These operators want to use LTE to increase capacity and peak rates on their existing mobile networks."

Top 22 Operators Account for 50% of Total WiMAX Subscribers

The top 22 operators worldwide will contribute nearly 2.5 million subscribers by the end of 2009 – up from 1.24 million today – and close to 4 million by the end of 2010 according to the latest research report from Maravedis entitled “The Top 22: Operators Who Will Make or Break WiMAX.”

Operators selected for the report enjoy two key conditions: they have deep enough pockets to deploy major networks and have access to sufficient spectrum to be profitable in the long term. WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report Reveals Deployments Hit by Economic Downturn as Subscription Rates and Service Revenues Lose Pace

BWA/WiMAX subscribers worldwide reached 2.68 million in Q3 2008 - a modest 13% growth over the previous quarter and a 91% increase over Q3 2007, according to the 6th issue of the WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis ( http://www.maravedis-bwa.com).

Global service revenue growth is losing pace as WiMAX operators experience ARPU stagnation and slowing down, or even decline in WiMAX adoption. The economic downturn is accelerating the shift in consumer spending towards flat rates for broadband wireless.

Adlane Fellah, CEO & Founder, remarked "these are tough times for mobile WiMAX - vendors and leading operators are struggling to fund their WiMAX plans."
